Museum in Our Streets

A S.H.O.P. Community Project

Sandy Hook Organization for Prosperity seeks to promote the Village as a family friendly, pedestrian oriented community which celebrates Sandy Hook’s unique historic heritage and beautiful natural setting.

Sandy Hook was the first settlement beyond the village of Newtown, the quaint little settlement that we know now started to form shortly after the first Gristmill was built on the Pootatuck River to utilize the water power of the substantial river. The village center businesses opened to serve the workers that located here to run the many industrial endeavors that followed.

SHOP is working with Museum in the Streets and the Newtown Historical society to create a walking tour through our village. Visitors will be invited to follow a sign posted route, with accompanying essays to discover the history of our community. We want to tell our story through the images selected from the archives. We feel that Sandy Hook Village is a unique place, and we look forward to sharing our history!
